Neil Arun didn’t want to miss a rare but risky opportunity to embed with an Iraqi police unit, hunting members of al Qaeda. But his employers -- responsible for Neil’s security -- weren’t happy. This film by Richard Pendry nvestigates how a frontline journalist balances risk and reward.
Being reminded of the magazine was a slight smack in the face/reality check that we only have one week left of holidays. So you know the drill by now. Anyone who wants to contribute drop me a line at ummmagazine@googlemail.com
It was supposed to come out at the start of February, but I'd like this one to have much more input from everyone, so I think I'll move the date back until the middle of Feb. I'd also like it if you'd turn up on the first Monday back for a meeting. I'll arrange a time later. I want story ideas sent in before this date though.
Please come up with an idea of something to write, instead of just saying you'll contribute, because it has meant that people have missed out in the past. Think like a student - many students' favourite things so far have been the horrors of both Liberty Quays and Peak House.
I imagine we'll only publish two more mags due to funds. I believe UMSA are willing to give us money to publish one more issue. Therefore we need to raise the other money through advertising or something else like a Valentine's Day-before Ball. If you want to help with advertising, speak up.
I'd appreciate it if anyone who was considering running for editor next year would also let me know. I know we have half a year left, but it might take that long to tell you all the things I've done wrong this year... It also has to be a democratic vote, so I'm sorry if you feel like it's just a popularity contest. Word of warning: don't put yourself forward if you don't have the time to dedicate to it. It'll probably be less mad next year, but it still needs a lot of improvements. Albeit, I'm sure the person who gets it will be fabulous.
Huge thank you to everyone who helped in 2009. Bring on 2010.
P.S. I'm going to circulate an email saying the same things. Apologies if you read it twice.
EDIT: Having thought about it more, the idea of a Valentine's Ball has grown on me. Similarly, if you want to help out with this event (once I've checked it over with UMSA) let me know.
