News from Europe

Just back from some snowy days in Brussels, finding out about the intricacies of the Lisbon treaty and talking to officials. We also spent some time with the European press operation. They have remarkable facilities and resources available free for journalists and anyone who is interested. This includes being a very useful source of material for audio, video, and pictures on all kinds of topics - not just pertaining to the workings of the European institutions. It is well worth checking out their elaborate audio visual portal  www.ec.europa.eu/avservices because everything they produce is copyright free and readily available in all kinds of formats. If you need material for newsdays - or anything else - do have a look. After all your taxes are supporting all this effort.

They also mentioned a 'Picturing Europe' competition they are running (value is 10,000 Euros) for the best 3 minute clip on 'My view of Europe' details of which are explained on the site.

...and I have actually had the prvilege of using the press facilities located in the European Parliament there, during  a mock European Parliament run by my school and others from across Europe. It was an impressive experience and one that actually set me firmly on the track to taking a course in journalism here at the CfJ.

Similar events to the one that I attended are regularly hosted by European Youth Media, though not always in Brussels and with far more stress on the journalism side rather than on the politics. Though I've tried, I sadly haven't been able to attend one yet, first due to my age (17 at the time) but now due to dates conflicting with university...but as you can apply to attend up to the age of 30 I guess there will still be plenty of opportunities.

Thanks for the link Suzanne, it looks like it could be very useful!
