Peter Worthington has had an amazing life. And his obituary, which he wrote himself, certainly has an arresting opening line.
I am certain that everyone in the Centre will want to join me in offering huge congratulations to Tania Steere who is the 2011 Bob Friend Scholar. Competition for the scholarship is always intense, and this year was no exception. So, in addition to celebrating Tania's success, I'd like to offer thanks to the other shortlisted candidates: Jay Akbar, Peter Brown, Danielle Morris and Scott Mitchell, and to all the students who competed for this year's scholarship. Your hard work and creativity is a credit to the Centre for Journalism and the University of Kent. Tania will receive her prize from Rob Kirk, Editorial Development Manager at Sky News, on 25 February at the annual Bob Friend Memorial Lecture when Jon Snow, Presenter of Channel 4 News, will deliver the third annual lecture. Every student in the Centre is expected to attend and to share in celebrating Tania's achievement. Distinguished guests will include the Vice Chancellor and the two previous Bob Friend Scholars, Alan McGuinness (2009) and Dan May (2010). Alan and Dan have both proved to be excellent ambassadors for the Centre, the University and Sky News. I know that Tania will do a superb job too.
