University fees and the new generation of Labour supporters.

David Miliband expressed outrage about the raise in tuition fees to a lecture hall full of students yesterday afternoon.

Speaking at the University of Kent, Mr Miliband, the former foreign secretary and current MP for South Shields, said the measure was a move “far far too far.”

A quantum news puzzle

They say journalists never let the truth get in the way of a good story, but the same might now be true of politicians. Was an illiegal immigrant allowed to stay in this country because he owned a cat, or wasn't he?

Tuesday conference cancelled

There will be no editorial conference tomorrow, Tuesday 23 Feb. I have to be in London to judge the 2010 Reuters/UACES Reporting Europe competition. Many apologies. I shall be back, fresh as a spring lamb and twice as fragrant, on Wednesday.

Eady to talk privacy at Kent conference

Sir David Eady will give the opening address to a privacy conference at the University of Kent next month. Arguably the most influential High court judge in matters involving the media, Eady has presided over numerous key privacy hearings, including those of Sir Max Moseley, singer Loreena McKennitt and, most recently, Tiger Woods. Such is his prominence that the Daily Mail has accused him of having a "virtual monopoly over all cases against the media, enabling him to bring in a privacy law by the back door".

Conference - Tuesday 17 November

There will be no editorial conference on Tuesday 17 November.

No conference tomorrow

Tomorrow morning's editorial conference is cancelled, so students can spend a valuable extra half hour on revision. Shorthand will go ahead as normal.
