Ancelotti's Chelsea provide professional Wembley fightback

FA Community Shield: Chelsea 2 Manchester United 2 (Chelsea win 4-1 on penalties).

Carlo Ancelotti must be delighted with his first trophy in English football.

At half time, his Chelsea team should have been punished with a three or four goal deficit in what was a lethargic, uninspired and generally drab display.

However the former AC Milan manager ruffled some feathers during the break and restored his side's spirit and skill to recover against Manchester United, claiming the Community Shield 4-1 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time.

Rooney rattles brace past shamefaced Slovakia

Wayne Rooney bagged a double for England against Slovakia in a 4-0 friendly win at Wembley ahead of Wednesday's World Cup qualifier with Ukraine.

Emile Heskey opened the scoring on eight minutes, whilst Rooney struck the hosts' second 20 minutes from time, before Frank Lampard caressed in a third and set up Rooney for a fourth in the final ten minutes.

But the match will be best remembered for David Beckham gaining his 109th England cap as a second half substitute and exceeding Bobby Moore's record for an outfield player.

Chelsea deny Wigan in smash and grab win

Chelsea 2-1 Wigan Athletic

Terry 25           Kapo 82

Lampard 90

FRANK LAMPARD secured a dramatic late winner for Chelsea, as Guus Hiddink's 100% record was maintained at home to Wigan Athletic in a 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge.

Lampard rose highest to a Michael Ballack flick-on inside the penalty area, to loop the ball over onrushing Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland, despite protests that the England midfielder had impeded ex-Blues defender Mario Melchiot in the process.

Scolari's sterile Chelsea continue to crack

The Stamford Bridge pitch looked worn-out on Saturday after recent inclement weather in West London and nationally and reflected Chelsea's performance in their 0-0 draw against Hull City.

Blues boss Luiz Felipe Scolari needed to recruit some greater vitality and width during the January transfer window and in on-loan Inter Milan winger, Ricardo Quaresma, Chelsea have partially papered over the cracks.

Formula One's forgotten men - Part One

Formula One has had numerous drivers in its history who have attracted positive and negative attention. Comment - Scolari's Stoke bailout fails to hide Chelsea's deficiencies

Hamlet always had a trick up his sleeve to exacting revenge against evil Uncle Claudius who slayed Hamlet's father in the Shakespearian play. Feigning madness and creating that false disposition unnerved his opponent.

It is therefore a shame that Luiz Felipe Scolari has not found the permanent solution to his evolving problems he is constantly enduring at Chelsea.

Kawasaki pull-out leads to further motorsport mess

A TURBULENT winter for motorsport has resulted in casualty rates becoming ever closer to an Accident & Emergency (A&E) department at a local hospital.

Motorcycle giant Kawasaki's decision to withdraw from Grand-Prix motorcycle racing (Moto GP) is the fourth major exit by a leading manufacturer involved in motorsport, following Honda in Formula One and Subaru and Suzuki in the World Rally Championship (WRC) last month (December).

Bowyer joins Birmingham on loan

LEE BOWYER has joined Birmingham City on loan from West Ham United until the summer.

Bowyer, 32, will link up with City chief Alex McCleish's side after becoming redundant in West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola's plans at Upton Park.

The ex-Newcastle United, Leeds United and Charlton Athletic midfielder will move immediately in to McCleish's squad at St Andrews and is reportedly moving up north partly due to West Ham's necessity to reduce their wage bill.

Murray masters past Petzschner in preparation for Australian Open

ANDY MURRAY continued his superb recent form ahead of the Australian Open, after beating Philipp Petzschner in straight sets 6-2, 6-4, in the second round of the Qatar Open.

The 21-year-old Brit, who won the competition last year beating Stanislas Wawrinka, stormed past German, Petzschner, in just 18 games to reach the quarter-finals.

Murray executed some superb volleys and backhand slices to break Petzschner in the third game of the opening set upon his fifth break point.
