Dismal England get out-shined by Superstars

It was 20/20 for $20 million, but England didn’t even deserve 20p after their dismal batting performance after winning the toss on a pleasant Caribbean Saturday evening. No-one got going and if it hadn’t been for Samit Patel and Stuart Broad’s calmer heads, the final score might have been even more pathetic than the paltry 99 they mustered up in just 19.5 overs. Some say it was the nerves of the vast sums of money which was riding on their performance, whereas others are labelling it as just a bad day at the office. It couldn’t have come at a worse time as the two Stanford Superstar openers showed just what was possible as boundaries kept coming in the first few overs of their reply. England needed wickets but even Super Fred couldn’t stem the flow of runs. Old-hand Chris Gayle’s fluent drives and serene cuts were contrasted coolly with the belligerent front-foot pulls and wild upper cuts of the 20-year-old keeper-batsman Andre Fletcher, and the game was all but sealed with the score at 67 – 0 off just 7 overs. No signs of money pressures on the two batsmen as they continued to score freely off the lacklustre England attack and the aptly-named Superstars squad linked arms as the requisite runs fell to just 4. In true Caribbean style their faultless captain Gayle hoisted Flintoff high over Mid-on to win the match with a towering six, and the congregation swarmed the field to congratulate the two not-out batsman. 15 instant dollar-millionaires were made just like their lives were changed forever in the space of three hours. Not the spectacle the neutral were hoping for, but any cricket lover will see how much that money will mean to West Indian cricket. Undoubtedly it will be used on more fruitful pleasures than fast cars and expensive houses, many players stating before the game it would be invested into family life and community cricket. The $3.5 million going to the West Indies cricket board will do wonders for cricket over there and although one must feel commiserations for Pietersen and his squad, the undoubted champions of the inaugural tournament will feel they definitely earned their cash in this very special match.

Hi,
There’s not been a result here in 20 championship games and you can see why. There’s not much pace in the pitch, but it does have good carry. You have to have something different if you’re going to win here. If we can make them follow-on we can put some nervous twitches inside the Warwickshire dressing room.
cricket scores

... outshone?

But i did hear we got battered (ha) But i think, like you said, it was better the Superstars won, because they WILL put it to good use, it means so much more to them like you touched on. $3.5m will go further than it would over here. We only seem to care about football, Rugby went out of fashion again after 2003, Cricket after the Ashes in 2005, it boosts national pride for a bit but it's only 'making do' because The only thing this country wants, scratch that, needs is for the Football team to do something.

We spend more money on that than anything else, we waste more on that than anything else. Athletics will benefit from the olympics because I think schools are better equipped for that than any other sport, but football will always dwarf everything else, until we win a Wolrd Cup or Euros other sports won't be able to step out of the shadow. F1 has always been sort of an exception though I think, seeing as it is dominated by the British, half the teams are based in the UK anyway ha.

How the hell did that rant happen? Oh well.

It's shocking how much this country adores football. In Australia it's a toss up between cricket and their national sport Australian rules football. Both of which I crave with a passion. Despite that I may be slaughtered for this, England needs to expand beyond it's football obsession and realise it has teams in other sports which make this country proud. To be honest, as much as I can happily spend an afternoon watching Chelsea or even England play football, I would much rather spend a summer's afternoon lazing back infront of a fan an watching the cricket. It is truly the English gentleman's game.

used to be about the skill and talent...

These days it's about a bunch of pretty boy ponces dancing around the pitch and making millions for doing so!

People say that cricket is a boring sport because it's so slow, a point with which I completely disagree, but football is becoming increasingly more boring these days! It's the same old, same old!

Will Spurs be relegated or won't they?
Oh look its a toss up between Chelsea, Man U, Arsenal and Liverpool to win the cup...
Not to mention the poor excuses for 'fouls' that happen these days!

Come on boys...MAN UP!

Now Rugby, that is a sport!

Always proud of our national teams. We love our English rugby team, cricket team, table tennis team and our boxers, this country is number one in supporting our sportsman in any sport. It's not that we hate or dont acknowledge other sports, it's just football is a national treasure.

Football
